Sangeetha restaurant courtyard in Chennai with carved timber pillars, a skylight, terracotta brick, and central planting
Sangeetha, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

The brief

The courtyard, brought to the table.

Inspired by Chettinad residences and the vernacular architecture of Tamil Nadu, the restaurant transforms the courtyard — historically the social heart of the home — into the central element of its dining environment.

The space unfolds through verandah-like transitions, creating a layered journey between intimate and communal areas. Skylights and lush indoor landscaping bring natural light and greenery into the interiors, so the room breathes the way a traditional courtyard house does.

Rather than replicating traditional architecture, the design distils its essential qualities of openness, connection, and hospitality into a contemporary setting. Rich timber detailing, terracotta accents, and handcrafted finishes establish a warm, tactile material palette rooted in regional traditions, and a collaboration with Hookkapani adds another cultural layer through bespoke artworks inspired by the region's stories and artistic heritage.

01 / Plan

A courtyard at the centre.

The traditional courtyard becomes the dining room's organising heart, holding intimate and communal seating around one shared space.

02 / Light

Verandahs, skylights, and green courts.

Layered transitions, daylight from above, and indoor landscaping keep the interiors open, planted, and calm.

03 / Craft

Timber, terracotta, and art.

Handcrafted finishes and bespoke Hookkapani artworks root the restaurant in Tamil Nadu's material and artistic traditions.
